Permits for Visiting Moreh

Moreh (also called Mori) is Manipur's primary border trading town with Myanmar, approximately 110 km from Imphal in Tengnoupal district (formerly part of Chandel). Visiting Moreh requires:

  • Manipur ILP — specifying Tengnoupal district
  • Special district permission — from the Deputy Commissioner's office in Moreh/Tengnoupal. This can be arranged through local operators or on arrival at Moreh checkpoint.
Crossing into Myanmar from Moreh is not permitted for general tourists without a pre-arranged Myanmar visa and Land Border Crossing Permit. Do not attempt to cross the border without proper documentation. The "free movement zone" for tribals does not apply to Indian tourists.

What to Do at Moreh

Moreh is famous for its border market ("bazaar") selling Myanmar goods — jade, teak products, tropical fruits, textiles. Day trips from Imphal are popular (5–6 hours one way). Stay options are limited — most visitors return to Imphal the same day.
